Kevin Sparrow: Product Specialist (EAL)

Please tell us about what you do on a day-to-day basis.

I create and develop innovative qualifications principally for the electrotechnical and engineering sectors for specialist qualifications awarding organisation EAL. The role involves working with stakeholders from the industry including employers, the JIB, SJIB, IET and the NICEIC; and also working with customers (colleges, training providers) and learners.

How did you get into your line of work?

Through my previous role as a question writer and Internal Quality Assurer and Lecturer of Electrical Installation at Chichester College.

What qualifications are required?

For my particular role, it would be worthwhile studying a higher level engineering qualification in addition to a full complement of vocational and technical qualifications and relevant teaching and quality assurance qualifications.

What kind of person would this suit?

A person with a passion for engineering and attention to detail.

Are there any challenges involved that people should be aware of – late nights etc.?

You must be well organised, and be able to work autonomously on numerous projects.

What are the best parts of your job/most enjoyable aspects?

Creating up-to-date, high-quality qualifications which serve the industry, and are well received by colleges, training providers, employers and learners.

What advice would you give to those who are embarking upon their electrotechnical careers?

Learn as much as you can working with experienced engineers. Seek opportunities to learn new skills and be involved on projects where you can grow your skillset (such as project management, design, or specialist installations etc.).

Work towards becoming a JIB Approved Electrician, and undertake professional development throughout your career.

Are there any skill gaps at the moment, which more young electricians should aim to fill?

Completing an electrotechnical apprenticeship will give you a valued set of competencies which enables opportunities across the sector. Keep up to date with technologies such as lighting control and building energy management systems, and of course the IET Wiring Regulations.
