Simon Mitchell: Installation Electrician

How did you get into your line of work?

I built an extension on my house and really enjoyed the electrical side of the build, so decided I’d like to go into that line of work.

What qualifications are required?

A number of electrical qualifications, 2330 level 2&3, 17th edition, NVQ, inspection & testing, but the experience is more important.

What kind of person would this suit?

Hands-on, hard-working, keen to learn and to adapt to various surroundings.

Are there any challenges involved that people should be aware of – late nights etc?

Out of hour working, shift work, working at heights, working in confined spaces etc.

What are the best parts of your job/most enjoyable aspects?

Working in different places/venues all the time, and meeting a wide range of people.

What advice would you give to those who are embarking upon their electrotechnical careers?

Try to get on-site experience first, be 100 per cent sure it’s what you want to do.

Are there any skill gaps at the moment, which more young electricians should aim to fill?

At WL we are very different to usual domestic/commercial electricians and think more data/programming electricians would be helpful.
